Armed and Famous

Who isn’t excited to see Officer Francis Llewellyn ‘Ponch‘ Poncherello become a pseudo real cop. This show has to be awesome. And by awesome, I mean complete crap. But probably entertaining. Where’s my CHiP’s theme song?

Cuteness!

This does not count as a post from Karen.

Thursday, December 28th, 2006

Because I have all of these ideas of things to post about. But I am forgetting what I wanted to say, and I’m a bit tired tonight. So I promise to actually post those things, and not just count this as a post.

I was showing E the FANTASTIC D**k in a Box skit from SNL and we SOMEHOW stumbled across what should have been our wedding song.

I promise I will post again before the end of the year. But meanwhile, remember that you’re our inspiration. Truly.

Also, if you’re reading this and have the means, come to our New Year’s party.

Rocky Balboa & Update

K and I went to see Rocky Balboa last night. It’s getting some mixed reviews, because clearly its a flawed film. But man, it was a lot of fun. If you’re a fan of the Rocky series (except V, cause no one is a fan of Rocky V), then you’ll like this movie.

I went in expecting campy, slightly over the top nostalgia, and thats what I got. Karen seemed to enjoy herself too.

Unfortunately, the scene was hoping for the most did not come to pass. Survivor did not follow Rocky around on one of his training runs singing “ROCK! ROCKROCKROCK! ROCKROCKROCK! ROCKROCK ROOOOOCK!” as I hoped. Oh well, there’s always Rocky 7….or Rambo 4.

Speaking of Rambo 4, there have been a string of late 80’s early 90’s movies coming back, and I have to say I’m excited, though Die Hard 4: Live Free or Die Hard has got to be the single worst title ever (I take that back, the preview we saw last night for Blood and Chocolate is the single worst movie title ever). I think I’m most excited for Beverly Hills Cop 4, even though 3 was horrible. I really want to see Balki again.

In other news, this next week will be very interesting. I have two offers on the table will here back from the job in Chicago next week. By next Friday, Karen and I should have a really good idea where we’ll be for the next 5 years or so. The companies are all very different from each other, as are the positions themselves. They all have elements of what I currently do that I like and none of the things about what I currently do that I don’t like. All have similar benefits, health care, and the like, so it could be a really interesting choice.

The job in Chicago is an interesting one, because I think the work and the work environment itself will be the most fun, but we’d be out in the ‘burbs and getting downtown for weekend fun would be a hassle. Also, Chicago is vastly more expensive than Charlotte, so it would take longer for us to buy a house, something that we’re really looking forward to. But we’ll see. We’ll know a lot more in a week…

Interviews and Updates

Monday, December 11th, 2006

Wanted to drop everyone a quick note and say hi. I’ll try to keep things brief, but we’ll see. Anyway, the past few weeks have been somewhat of a whirlwind. After Thanksgiving, I started shopping my resume. That led to multiple phone interviews and a few face to face interviews so far. Definitely more than I was expecting for this time of year.

I had one interview with a great company last week, and am really interested in exploring it further. I have a second round interview scheduled for Friday morning, so it appears they are interested as well. I have an interview with a company all tomorrow afternoon. In order to get this interview, I had to take a personality test and an online skills assessment test. Apparently I did well enough to be brought in for the full court press.

Next week, Karen and I are flying to Chicago to interview with company up there. So, it’s been busy, and I like all three companies, so we’ll see. I’ll try to keep everyone up to date.

In other news, this week I’m finally taking some classes to finish off some training I had purchased 3 years ago. I went with a certain company to obtain my MCSE. I wasn’t terribly excited about getting it, but figured it would be a good launching point for other endeavors, maybe later getting some development certs or DBA certs. Anyway, the company kept cancelling classes, and all of them were supposedly pre-requisite. So when the class was canceled, I couldn’t take that class until the next semester, or class that was supposed to be after it until I finished the cancelled class.

As I’m now moving on, I decided I’d had enough. So I had my account rep sign me up for classes that woulndn’t necessarily help me get a certification, but would help me with round out some experience I hadn’t worked directly with in a while and might help with that next job. My other goal was to take classes that were available in the next 2 months, as I want to put this firmly behind me. My account rep relented, and I was able to score 3 classes. Tonight is my first one, and I’m taking a mid-level ASP.NET class.

Also this week, we have our annual Blue vs. Gold basketball game followed by a holiday party for work on Wednesday. The basketball game is a lot of fun, and should be pretty competitive this year. The holiday party is always a blast, with the Employee of the Year and White Elephant. Don’t know if anyone will be singing the 12 days of Pi Kapp this year or not.

Anyway, I’m sure there are other things to update you on, but I need to finish a few more things at work before I head to class. I’ll update later if I have time or think of something.

Refreshing

Wednesday, December 6th, 2006

In this day and age, very often you here a celebrity or someone famous criticizing the media for the way the media treats them. While I really don’t like the paparazzi or the media coverage around celebrity in general, I do also think that the celebrity themselves are getting what they deserve. So its nice to hear when someone in a position of (modest) celebrity is able to put things in perspective.

I was reading espn.com this morning when I came across an example. John Fox, the coach of the Carolina Panthers, was talking about how Jake Delhomme, the Panthers starting quarterback, was reacting to the criticism by the media for his recent sub-par play.

“It had nothing to do with assurance. I reminded him in this business we’re under attack and that’s why were well compensated,” Fox said.

Read the rest of the article here for context.  It seems to me that athletes who are celebrities tend to have a harder time dealing with the media than others.  But this is refreshing to see some in the business can put it into perspective.

Fried

So, apparently last night, the 240v industrial outlet we had put in specifically to run our servers fried. The plug is toast, but our battery backup (which this is the plug for) seems to be ok except for the plug. I have the feeling that we dodged a major bullet by not having the entire place go up. Everything is up and running, just not through the battery backup anymore.
