3 Day Update | 3/4 done for the day

Friday, November 7th, 2008

From Karen 11/07/2008 @ 3:28 PM

At pit stop 4 and going strong. We’ve gone 15.5 miles and have less than 6 to go. Things have been running slow due to the traffic delays along the route. But I feel confident we can finish in time today.

They are hurrying us because the route closes at sunset, which is in a few hours.

Thanks everyone for your replies! I can’t respond yet since we’re rushing but I love reading them.

3 Day Update | Lunch

Friday, November 7th, 2008

From Karen 11/07/2008 @ 1:33 PM

Things are running behind – it’s 12:30 and the lunch stop is scheduled to close. But there are a couple thousand of us still waiting in line for lunch. They asked us to grab the lunch and take it to the next pit stop which is 1.6 miles away.
Met a woman who is walking to teach her students about way to help others. She seems like the kind of teacher that her students will always remember.

From Karen 11/07/2008 @ 2:27 PM

No time for a full update – pit stop about to close and they’ll make stragglers ride the bus to camp. But we’re at 13.1 miles – 8.1 to go until camp!

3 Day Update | First Pit Stops

Friday, November 7th, 2008

From Karen 11/07/2008 @9:49 AM

First pit stop, 3.2 miles down. Today we are walking 21.2 miles. The line for port-a-johns is very long. But we’re supposed to be drinking enough fluids to need to pee every hour. So we better get used to the lines.
I just heard a walker say the food tent has no more cheese snacks.
BOOO! The 2300 walker who came to the stop before me took them all.
The other couple of thousand behind me will also be disappointed.

From Karen 11/07/2008 @ 11:19 AM

I THOUGHT TEXAS WAS FLAT, WHAT’S THIS HILL ALL ABOUT?
First quick stop. A full rest stop (where I was last email) has bathrooms, food, beverages and a medical tent. Quick stops have beverages and bathrooms only. Now headed to the next stop. 6.4 miles down!

From Karen 11/07/2008 @ 12:02 PM

Rest stop 2 – playing kanye west and beyonce! Just talked to a walker who is 6 months pregnant and walking for her mom.

3 Day Update | Getting Ready

Friday, November 7th, 2008

From Karen 11/07/2008 @ 7:26 AM

We’re here at south fork ranch in parker, tx where they filmed exterior shots for the show, dallas. Maybe jr is here, getting shot.
There are a few thousand walkers here and we are ready to rock!
Opening ceremony will start soon. This is where we warm up, get ready, and think of the reason for our journey.
Ok, fingers are cold and the ceremony is starting!

From Karen 11/07/2008 @8:09 AM

Opening ceremony is done and everyone is crying – it’s going to be a beautiful day. Time to go – it’s time to walk!

From Karen 11/07/2008 @8:11 AM

Holy crap! As we are walking out they are playing the theme song from Dallas! AWESOME

Good night everyone – wish us luck. Thanks again so much for supporting us.

TODAY!

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

Today is the most important day of the year. Not just for me, but for our ENTIRE COUNTRY. Everyone reading this should stop and take a moment to consider the importance of today.

It’s our wedding anniversary!

Two years ago, Erik and I were married by a minister who talked about putting God seasoning in our food. Then we went to the reception and Spider-man blessed our marriage.

Look – Erik trying to tell me something and me just wanting to make out. That picture could have been taken yesterday.

Happy Anniversary, Button! Let’s order some dinner for delivery tonight, then watch election returns and make out.

GET EMAIL UPDATES

Thanks to my Jack Bauer Blackberry (Jackberry?), I’ll be sending interested supporters emails from the event. These updates may not exactly be magnificent prose. In fact, you can expect something like “MY FEET HURT” and “HOT DAMN, THIS REST STOP HAS PB&J!” or “I GOT A BLISTER THAT LOOKS LIKE A BREAST IMPLANT!”. But if you’re interested in receiving them, email me at karenbgarrett (at) gmail (dot) com.

CHECK THIS BLOG

Next week when I get home, I’ll post pictures and stories of the event.

Thanks everyone!

Site Maintenance and update

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

Hey everyone,

We just finished changing hosting companies.  After the last hosting company “upgraded” our web server and their website manager, I decided moving to a cheaper hosting company was worth the effort.  We may have lost some comments on the blog, but I think we have most of the posts migrated (excluding the 3 months worth of posts we lost when our last hosting company “upgraded” us).

Hopefully, your RSS feeds won’t need to be updated, as I tried to set up the structure of the blog the exact same way.

In other news, surgery went well on Thursday.  I got the best news out of the situation as possible in that they didn’t need to repair my rotator cuff or labrum.  After they removed some bone spurs and widened the pathway around my tendons, they determined the rotator cuff should heal on its own.  This will make rehab a few months, instead of 6-8, so I’m really pleased about that.

I’ll update more later.

Damn Dog

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

I should start a new category of posts called, “How I Know Our Dog is an Asshole.” Because sometimes, he really is. And sometimes he’s a sweet and loving puppy. Sometimes.

Things the damn dog has eaten (other than his regular meals) in the past couple of weeks:

- 15-20 lbs of dog food (resulted in: call to the emergency vet)

- over 50 tablets of Deter, a medicine to prevent dogs from eating their own poop (resulted in: call to the emergency vet, him eating his poop three days later)

- 5 month supply of heartworm medication (another call to the emergency vet)

- the water bill

- new issue of Real Simple

- spiral bound wall calendar

- paycheck stub

- thank you note from the neighbor

- end of power cord to Bernie MacBook (by far the most expensive thing on the list)

This is usually what greets me when I get home:

On the plus side, he does a mean Sarah Palin impression:

Stanley is just over 5 months old, so we have a long way to go before he’s out of his puppy phase. However, we are very close to his de-balling. It’s scheduled for the day before Thanksgiving, so you know what I’ll be thankful for.

To see how much he has grown in the 3 months we have had him, here’s a compare and contrast.

8 weeks – cute, innocent, sweet little puppy. Contender for the title of Internet’s Cutest Puppy.

5 months – farting, biting, destructive puppy. Contender for the title of “#1 Cause of Why Karen Had A Stroke”.

I know I complain and get upset at him a lot. but really? I love that little shit. And I’m not the only one.
